Animal Dentistry

Why Animal Dentistry is Important

Dental disease is one of the most common diseases we see in our pets. Dental disease can be visible on the crown of the tooth as calculus and tartar build up, but most of the disease is under the gum line and not visible to the naked eye. Dental disease can cause bad breath, red gums (gingivitis), changes in eating habits and weight loss. It can be very debilitating and painful and can also contribute to diseases in other organ systems.

How Animal Dentistry Works:

Our dental procedures consist of a visit with the doctor for an examination and oral hygiene assessment and treatment plan. Then your pet will spend the day with us for his or her dental cleaning. Veterinary nurses perform the cleaning by probing and charting the mouth and then cleaning with an ultrasonic scaler and polisher. The veterinarian is responsible for the final assessment of your pets mouth and will determine if any teeth require surgical extraction. We do not perform root canals or advanced dental procedures (endodontics). If we feel that is the best interest to your pet we will refer you to a specialist in the area.

The doctor and nurses will also talk to you after the procedure about a continued preventative care home treatment plan for your pet.
