Pet Diagnostic Imaging

Why Pet Diagnostic Imaging is Important:

Did you know that not every animal hospital has access to an ultrasound or X-ray machine? We are so proud to be on the forefront of advanced care in Keene!

Ultrasound is a diagnostic tool used to non-invasively examine organ systems.

Ultrasound is a medical technique that uses sound waves to create images of the inside of the body. These images are produced in varying shades of grey, which we call “echogenicity”. The shades of grey allow us to evaluate organ size, location, shape, and even texture within the organ itself. Ultrasound is non-painful and carries no risk of radiation exposure, though it does require that the hair on your pet’s abdomen will be shaved to improve image quality.

We use Ultrasound to investigate, diagnose, and monitor a wide range of conditions including:

  • Evaluating the spleen or liver for a mass, hematoma, or signs of inflammation (such as hepatitis).
  • Screening the urinary bladder for stones, calculi, or inflammation.
  • Cardiac Disease, see our page on Cardiac Care and Echocardiograms.
  • GI Conditions such as tumors, masses, GI wall thickening and inflammation, and investigating obstructions caused by foreign material.
  • Assessing the structure of the kidneys to identify a cause of renal failure.
  • Investigating pregnancies! Scanning for fetal health and viability.
  • Using the Ultrasound to guide safe organ sampling techniques (fine needle aspirates, and urinary bladder cystocentesis), to investigate lymph nodes, the spleen and liver, and abdominal masses.

Our vets have completed extensive training in veterinary sonography, and we’re excited to work directly with specialists for interpretation of these ultrasound scans.

Every single ultrasound performed at Court Street Vet is submitted to our telemedicine team & your pet’s case is reviewed by a Board Certified Veterinary Specialist (Cardiologist, Internist, Radiologist, or Advanced Practitioner)! The specialists provide a written report that comments on ultrasound findings, interpretation of results, treatment recommendations, and (if requested) general anesthetic considerations.

Ultrasound is a widely available modality and easy to learn! But we offer even more: in working with board-certified specialists Court Street Vet elevates standard of care by ensuring that the only person interpreting your pet’s scan and making treatment recommendations is residency-trained and qualified to do so.

Radiographs (X-Rays) are an important diagnostic tool in veterinary medicine.

Radiography is a medical technique that uses X-Rays to create images of the inside of the body. These X-Ray images are used to diagnose and monitor various medical conditions- particularly those related to bones, lungs, and internal organs.

We use X-rays to investigate, diagnose, and monitor a wide range of conditions including:

-Bone fractures, dislocations, arthritis, and ligament injury.

-Lung conditions such as pneumonia and asthma.

-Heart conditions, including congestive heart failure.

-GI conditions such as blockage caused by ingestion of a gastrointestinal foreign body, tumors, and constipation.

-Bladder conditions such as urinary stone, or tumors.

Court Street Veterinary Hospital is proud to offer instant digital radiography. These X-Ray images, obtained instantly and in a digital format, ensure efficient and improved image quality and allow advanced ease in transmitting radiographs to board certified specialists (radiologists) for consultation. We enjoy showing you the radiographs from our system, and if you have any questions please ask.

We are always happy to offer board certified radiologist consultations on any radiograph- through advances in telemedicine you can have a specialist’s opinion on your pet’s case without ever having to leave Keene!
